Old city Onogošt, founded in the fourth century as a Roman military fortress at the crossroads of important routes that connected the proper territories and adjacent areas, well situated on a natural rocky mound in a field between the Studenačke glavice and Trebjesa, lived through three major periods of human civilization. Through the ages, is has being torn down, rebuilt and upgraded by changing the look and masters, testifying about the major social and historical movements and changes in time in which it existed as a Roman Castrum, and as an object of defense of the entire area in Middle Ages, as the parish center at the time of flourishing of the Serbian state and finally, as a fortified Turkish city. Since its inception gothic Anagastum and medieval Onogošt was an active fort until the last invaders left.

The walls of the city eventually became tight for those who have sought refuge in it, so it starts the building under the city walls and spontaneously formed first settlements in the area - the beginnings of today's city. Therefore, the origin and development of the city must be linked to the old fortress city despite the fact that, even long before its creation, in Niksic field somewhere existed Roman settlement Anderba, which disappeared and which location has no immediate sources.

Liberation from the Turks in 1877 brings new settlers, gives a new impulse, there is a new spirit, it shows willingness and determination to "new well-Montenegro, which will, in addition to ancient heroism, wreathe with rays of culture and civilization." This orientation meant a desire for a new city next to the "old and rotten," Turkish town. This desire was realized with production of the first regulatory plan that was designed in 1883, which represents a concept of formation of solid urban structure by applying the model to a renaissance - baroque scheme of ideal cities. His disposition plan suggests ways and views of the distinctive internal and external reference points and the dominant structure that will tie the process of urbanization.

The plan was made by engineer Joseph Slade by the ordered of King Nichola.

The first three decades after the adoption of the plan features the rapid economic and social ascent, the development of handicrafts and trade, the emergence of a number of cultural and educational institutions and societies, and intensive urbanization. City has formed its backbone, and the construction of a number of representative objects (the Cathedral, the Palace, a complex of parks, Caesar's bridge) established important town landmarks. It was built in City Square with six streets that flow into it and formed several apartment blocks along the streets. The houses are low ore one-floor, simple, peaceful and harmonious architecture, with no special architectural value, but with the valuable qualities of the urban and cultural units.

The built of roads and bridges is achieved the connection with the world.
